The Artwork of Josh Widener
Woodcuts
Wood engraving is the oldest form of relief printmaking, which involves carving a design into the surface of a wooden block. Once the block is cut, the raised wood grain is rolled with ink, while the recessed areas that are carved avoid any contact with the ink. The block can then be used to make a relief print using fine art paper, or in many cases the block is used as the final piece of art that is varnished and framed.
